In the beginning

While building and running successful companies in construction aggregates and frac sand logistics, Kyle recognizes the need for software in the trucking business.

In 2006, Ruckit founder and CEO Kyle Kinsel started Coastal Crushed Concrete, an aggregate company serving the Houston construction market. Kyle would sell materials to a contractor, and he used trucking brokers to deliver loads, who worked with many independent trucks. When a contractor would call asking “Where are my trucks”, his company would have to call the broker who then called the drivers, so it would take multiple phone calls to get visibility into his operations. Kyle, like many others in the industry, quickly became frustrated by the inefficiency and wasted time dealing with his third party trucking companies.

A few years later, Kyle started Twin Eagle frac sand logistics, which grew to one of the largest frac sand logistics companies in the US.  Yet again, he faced the same inefficiencies in the oilfield trucking business where everyone worked in silos with no way to collaborate other than phone calls and paper records. Kyle decided to fix the problems he faced and began working on creating a technology company.

Kyle Meets Tarun

Looking for options to create a technology company, Kyle meets Tarun through a mutual friend.

Tarun Nimmagadda was a computer science major and a successful entrepreneur at the University of Texas in 2007 when Apple launched the first iPhone and app store. After seeing his first iPhone at a party, Tarun instantly recognized that smartphones would change the world, and that there would be a growing demand for software developers to build mobile applications. He and a few friends founded Mutual Mobile in 2009, and the company grew into one of the largest mobile app development companies in Texas.

Kyle and Tarun were both living in the same hotel in Austin when a mutual friend introduced them. They began formulating a plan to build a software platform that would transform the bulk trucking industry. With Tarun’s help, they were able to source some of the most talented software engineers in the Austin area. The initial hires of Juan Carlos, Steve Davis and Diego Larrea were enough to get an initial product to market.

Starting a Trucking Company

When they had trouble getting customers to test early prototypes of Ruckit, the founders decided to build their own trucking company.

Now came the hard part--finding customers to use the software and to provide feedback on the early prototypes of the Ruckit platform. After talking to several that were unwilling to risk their business on an unproven technology, Ruckit did something unusual. They decided to start their own trucking company to learn the ins and outs of the business.

Over the next year, with the hires of Rich Woods, Tasi Roth and Trey Secor, Ruckit began procuring work and signing up drivers. They learned the trucking business from the ground up, and used this as the R&D department for the development team. Side by side, the trucking team and the development team worked to build a successful trucking company and a software platform that met the needs of all parties including contractors, aggregate producers, trucking companies, and independent drivers.

New and Improved Ruckit

With their knowledge gained from running a trucking company, Ruckit launches an improved collaboration platform in 2018.

In early 2018, Ruckit launched a new platform that allows companies in the heavy construction and materials industry to collaborate and track all of their owned and third-party trucks. The platform reduces manual tasks like phone calls to drivers and paper ticket submissions. It also streamlines data entry for easy billing and invoicing. Customers no longer have to call and ask “Where are my trucks”, they can now see real-time maps showing the status and location of trucks and materials enroute. And the platform highlights problem areas so they can be fixed immediately before they impact business.

The new Ruckit platform is being rapidly adopted, with 2 of the top 10 aggregate producers now using the technology, and more customers are coming online every week. Ruckit is growing and investing in their mission to become the preferred platform and marketplace for logistics in heavy construction.
